Marom Volunteer Mission in Israel

Considered one of the darkest days in Israel’s modern history, October 7th changed the face of Israeli society forever. For the past three months, Israelis from all sectors of society have dropped everything to help in the war effort. This has created a massive workforce deficit. Fortunately, the Jewish community worldwide has come to Israel’s aid. Volunteers from all walks of life have left the comfort of their homes to assist in any way possible.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering fosters a sense of community, compassion, and social responsibility. It is a selfless act where people can contribute their time, skills, and energy to support various causes without expecting monetary compensation. The importance of volunteering extends far beyond the immediate impact on the recipients; it also profoundly benefits the volunteers themselves and society as a whole.

Moreover, volunteering provides a unique opportunity for individuals to gain a deeper understanding of social issues and challenges. By actively engaging with different communities, cultures and causes, volunteers develop empathy and a broader perspective on the world. This heightened awareness can lead to increased social consciousness and a desire to advocate for positive change.

Marom Volunteers

For two weeks this December, Marom hosted a group of young Jewish volunteers from across the globe. Leaving the comforts of home, they came to their Jewish homeland ready to contribute their abilities, knowledge, and positive energy. The opportunity to volunteer in Israel was precisely what they wanted.

When asked why they came, the message was clear, all the volunteers felt a strong connection to Israel and the need to help however they could. For many, coming to Israel now was the easiest decision they could make.

The group spent most of their time in the south. Here, they had the opportunity to work in the fields and greenhouses of Israel’s farming communities. These communities have suffered unthinkable losses on every level during the war.

Many of their residents and workforce were killed or taken hostage on October 7th. The survivors of these communities are living today as refugees scattered around Israel. They will need to wait for the war to end before they can begin the rebuilding process. The outpouring of volunteers worldwide has flooded in to fill the deficit and ensure the farms continue to work and the produce reaches consumers.

Connecting in Israel

While in Israel, the volunteers connected with the different communities in the South affected by the war. They also met with families who had loved ones taken hostage, survivors of the Nova festival, and soldiers fighting in the war.

Knowing they could contribute during Israel’s time of need and the new and lasting friendships with fellow volunteers is the gift they’ll be taking home.

Volunteering is an impactful act that not only benefits those in need but also promotes community cohesion, personal growth, and positive social change. Its significance is not limited to the tangible benefits it brings, but also in the transformative effect it has on the volunteers themselves and the overall fabric of society.
